The Thinker:
The great thing about your local wine shop is that it is like the weather – its offerings are always changing. I like to stop by and see what’s new. Often, I will make a purchase. Just as often, I will find great conversation and plant the seed for future growth of our wine cellar.
I almost always follow the same approach. Start with wines from France, gravitate through Spain, Italy and Germany closing with US based wines. I take note of bottles highlighted with impressive ratings (particular attention to Robert Parker) but I am also looking for great value and uniqueness. A couple of months ago I picked up a 2016 Infamous Goose Sauvignon Blanc just based on the name & logo. It made me laugh. It turned out being a great affordable wine with a very respectable rating of 85 from Wine Enthusiast. It became a talking point. Give yourself the freedom and patience to find and experience something new.
I picked up a couple of great bottles but am really jazzed by ’13 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Ovello. #61 of top wines of 2017 and very well rated.
